If you have been injured because of the criminal acts of another person, in Queensland or elsewhere, you may be entitled to compensation. Limited counseling and financial assistance is available through the Queensland Government’s Victim Assist scheme. We can give you information about this.
A civil claim may also be available against the offender personally or an organisation or entity (eg. the offender’s employer or a licensed venue) which has allowed the criminal behaviour to happen or cause you injury. We can advise you in detail about your right to claim and your prospects of success.
These claims may be handled by a public liability insurer, not the owner of premises or the person at fault. In those circumstances, it is the insurer who will pay any damages. If the defendant is criminally liable or uninsured, they will be required to pay any damages personally. Different rules can apply in other states and overseas – we can advise you about that.
